Information
This t-shirt was designed in collaboration with the Sri Chinmoy Centre and features original artwork by Sri Chinmoy and Filip Pagowski.
The Indian mystic and spiritual master Sri Chinmoy studied for 20 years at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry before moving to New York in the mid-1960s, when Eastern philosophy was flooding into the United States. He had been exposed to both meditation and athletics since childhood, and it is perhaps his teaching at the intersection of these two practices that will have the most profound impact for generations to come. For Chinmoy, a marathon was an opportunity and a method for overcoming the limitations of the ego tunnel. He saw the thresholds of human potential as the most fertile ground for growth and, perhaps, self-improvement. His legacy is carried on by countless followers around the world, with various races bearing his name, including the world's longest running race, the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race, which takes place around a single half-mile block in Jamaica, Queens, each summer for 52 days. The graphic was originally produced to commemorate Sri Chinmoy's seventh marathon race, the Jersey Shore Marathon in 1979, which he completed in 4:33:55 at the age of 48.
